At the end of an unusual year, it is the angel’s words to the shepherds in the fields outside Bethlehem, that has settled in my heart and mind.  Good news – Finally!  Great Joy – Imagine!

In spite of all the losses and changes, the disappointments and defeats, the Word of God fails not! In spite of fear that is rife these days – of possible loneliness or exposure to Covid, of bills piling up and work drying up, the age-old words of the angel rings clear and true… Do not be afraid!

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders, and he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.[2]

Dear friends and followers, may you too echo this sentiment, as you prepare a family feast – even if not everyone can attend, wrap gifts – even if they are humble and homespun and brace yourself for a quiet holiday this year.  Regardless, it is my prayer that each and every one of you will experience a deeper understanding of God with us[3] and thus a new, lasting and vivid joy!

Soon we will have to return to a new year with new challenges on every front.  As we do so, let us go back in the manner of the shepherds – glorifying and praising God[4]
